Projection: need to automatically qualify

New Haven’s résumé is anchored by a handful of gritty road wins at MA Lowell, Chicago State and St Francis PA and a couple of home victories over low-end nonconference foes, but those bright spots are overwhelmed by ugly losses at Connecticut, Vanderbilt and Seton Hall and by damaging setbacks at home to Le Moyne and twice against Mercyhurst that undermine any claim to quality. The committee would look at the profile and see road success against weak opposition rather than signature wins, plus inconsistency in split results with Chicago State and narrow losses at the likes of Boston College and Fordham that do little to offset the blowouts. Upcoming chances at Stonehill and on the road at Dickinson and Wagner, plus a rematch with Le Moyne, give New Haven paths to salvage its case, but as currently constructed the bad losses and lack of quality victories leave the program dependent on an automatic qualification to reach the field.
